What is Young Life?
The Mission and Vision of Young Life:“Young Life exists to introduce adolescents to Jesus Christ and to help them grow in their faith.”
"The catch phrase of Young Life says we are out to reach every kid, everywhere, for eternity. We want every teen to hear the message that Jesus loves them and cares about them even though they are sinners. We are radical prophets of a radical proposition…the proposition that every kid can know Jesus personally!"
These definitions define what I do as a Young Life leader so well. We show Christ's love in the way that we live and the way that we love people (“We love because He first loved us."-1 John 4:19) and then we invite them into this attainable life with Christ.
What does Young Life look like during the year?
CONTACT WORK
We go to school lunches, soccer games, softball games, baseball games, football games, all kinds of games, sleepovers, prank nights, ice cream, playing at the park, getting breakfast before school, hanging out at the school parking lot after school, getting dinner before clubs, getting dinner any time....any where our high school friends might be, that's where we try to be also. Think contact work is easy? Try walking into a high school cafeteria with hundreds of eyes staring at you. Awkward...
"Contact work is getting to know kids’ names, it is being seen, it is making friendships, it is doing activities with them, it is having deep conversations about their problems. But the purpose and passion of contact work is to draw kids to Jesus Christ." -Chuck Reinhold
CLUB
We have clubs once a week (my high school's clubs are on Tuesday nights) and our clubs consist of singing songs, playing mixer games (with the whole group), skits, games (anywhere from 1-6+ kids will get pulled up to perform a game in front of everyone), and then we end the night with a club talk. This is where we get to share the good news of the Gospel to our high school friends.
WEEKEND CAMP/SUMMER CAMP
We go to weekend camp sometime during each fall semester, and then go to a week long camp during the summer. Weekend camp is like club but to a greater extent. People who are on Young Life Staff will go on weekend camps to perform skits, games, lead singing, and give the club talks. It's such an incredible time because kids get to hear about Jesus in such an in depth but simple way, and it also sets the leaders who take the high school kids to camp for deeper conversations and more in depth questions about the person of Christ.
